Internet Safety

1. The article that I chose to read was Elder David A. Bednar's Things as They Really Are.
2. For the video resources I mostly just looked at websites that were kid oriented.
3. Reading-My favorite part of this talk was how he talked about truth and how we need to be able to discern things as they really are. This is so important for us to realize and to strive for. He also talked a lot about being aware of the alluring illusion of anonymity given off by cyberspace. He warned us against using media in such a way that we will not remember the importance of our physical bodies. He said that we should ask ourselves if what we are doing with cyberspace brings us closer to the spirit.
Video-I wanted to find things that I could suggest to my students that they could use themselves to help them learn to be safe on the internet. I found a lot of good games and animated video clips that I think would be good for children and would help them to learn what they should and shouldn't do to be safe on the internet.
4. The person I talked to (we will call him Patrick) already knew a lot about internet safety. He was even able to tell me about some things that I was not as knowledgeable about. However, he was not as aware of how to help little children to understand internet safety. So, when I shared the information that I had discovered on the kid friendly sites. I think that those sites would be so good because they have games, which interest children, so that the children can use them to learn more about internet safety while they are playing. I think Patrick will use the internet sites that I told him about to help him explain internet safety to children in a fun way that they will understand!

3 Videos Response

After watching the videos of I Love Spiders, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, and Habitats I think that one of the most important things that I learned from them about using technology to teach young children is that children love using technology. As a teacher I will always be working to get the students engaged in what I am trying to teach them and I think that using technology is a great way to do that. The students will be more likely to pay attention to a lesson that they are engaged in and excited about the way that they are excited about using technology. Having the students engaged like this would help them to pay attention and since they would be paying attention more they would be learning more. I think that any way to get students to internalize more and take more out of your lesson would be a great asset to use when teaching.

Technology at Riverview Elementary

It seems to me that there are a lot of different resources as far as technology readily available to the teachers at the school that I am doing my practicum in. As I was finding out what was available and what the teachers had access to I had so many ideas about different things that I could do for different lessons with each of the items of technology available. The thing that surprised me most was that as I was talking with some of the teachers about what the different technologies are that are available to them many of them said that they had never used any of it and that they mostly just taught is different ways. I am really excited to use all of these different technologies as I am teaching some of the lessons this month.

I completed the mid-course evaluation and the informed consent questionnaires

Science Plan

Content-
Endothermic and Exothermic reactions
Science-Chemistry -- Standard 4 Objective 2
This would be used in 5th or 6th grade

Pedagogy-
I will be observing the students as they are the main ones doing the experiment. I will help them with vocabulary as we go and asking them questions about what they think is going to happen and if they are able to classify the reactions as endothermic or exothermic. I will then have them make a table that tells the kinds of reactions that are endothermic or exothermic. They will be able to also make graphs of the temperatures of each of the reactions as they take place. Then I would like them to look at the data that they have created and tell me about it in a written paragraph.

Technology-
I will be using the temperature probes and the probes will be in the reactants before the reaction starts and as it progresses so that the students can see whether it is getting cooler or warmer. They will also be able to see how long it takes to get to the temperature that it finishes at. I will be projecting the screen so that the whole class can see it at once.

My Peers Virtual Tours

The people whose virtual tours I looked at were Emilie, Alyssa Young, Ashley Howden, and Ashley Daley. I thought that they all did a fabulous job. I learned a lot more about google earth through looking at their projects! I also saw a lot of ways to use google earth that I didn't initially think of like for science!

TPACK for virtual field trip--Hogle Zoo

The content that I will be using in my lesson will be animals that can be found in a zoo. This is a first grade level standard. My objective will be to help the students become more familiar with the animals that do not live in the wild in the area that we live in. I chose to do a virtual tour of this topic because I don't know if I will be able to take my students to the zoo and if I am unable to I would like them to be able to see photographs of the animals that they would be able to see there. The pedagogy I will be using will be exploring with the students let them think of all the different things that they can think of about the animals that they will be meeting and then fill them in on questions that they may have. I will be using Google Earth to help the students be able to see what the zoo is like from our classroom. I think that this would be fun for the students because even though they are still sitting in the classroom they get to interact with the animals and learn more about them.

Digital Story Video

This is Shel Silverstein's poem Sick!
The standard that this works for is Standard 8, Objective 6b

Digital Stories

I watched a few of my peers digital stories and I thought that they were all awesome! I have a few specific things that I am going to point out about each one.
Ashley Daley-I really liked the idea of the book trailer! I was thinking that this would be a fun way to do a book report or something like that!
Kristen Wagner-I liked the personal side of this story, I think it would be a great way to encourage your students to tell more about themselves in a kind of digital journal!
Nichole Mahas-I liked the idea of setting out the four main points and then giving examples so that the students could see what you were talking about!
Rachael Hamilton-I liked the whole idea of this story! I don't know what curriculum tie it had but I would be interested in learning that so that I could use something like that!
Katie Matthews-I loved the story! I really like how it was connected to her real life in a way and that she used such imagination!
Alyssa Ash-I really liked the story and I think it is awesome that it is an original! I think that students would have a great time writing their own books and then putting them into a video like that!

Web 2.0

This week I made my own wiki page. The URL for the page is http://sites.google.com/site/apageltechnologyintheclassroom/

I learned a lot this week about using several different things on the web. I was able to make my own wiki. I also was able to get signed up on goodreads, diigo, and google reader. I learned how to make a googledoc and how to talk via synchronous webcam. I had a really hard time with trying to start the wiki page when I was trying to do it through pbworks. Once I switched to a google sites it was a lot easier and I was able to do it without too much frustration. I really liked being able to use all the different resources with goodreads, diigo, and google reader. I also really liked the synchronous chat on the webcam, it was pretty fun!

Why I LOVE Education

I love education because I look at it as my way of making a difference in the future of our world. All of the students that I teach will go on with their lives after I teach them but hopefully not before I have had the chance to make a difference in their lives.
I also love how much I am able to learn from the children. I think that they teach me as much, if not more, than I teach them. Children are so wonderful to be around!
